Night lamps
Plug-in night lights with a dusk or PIR motion sensor switch on automatically after dark and off at dawn without any intervention. This category includes Baseus (Capsula, Cute Hedgehog), Yeelight (Plug-in Night Light, Bedside Lamp D2), BlitzWolf (BW-LT16, BW-LT9) and LDNIO models with a USB charger — for bedrooms, children's rooms, hallways and bathrooms.

Plug-in night lights — convenience without compromise
230 V plug-in night lights have one key advantage over battery-powered lamps: no charging or battery replacement is ever needed. Plug in once and they work for years. Power consumption is 0.5–2 W, which amounts to about £0.10–0.30 per year in energy — practically imperceptible on the bill. No transformer, no cable on the floor, no risk of tripping in the dark.
A dusk sensor means the night light switches on automatically when it gets dark and off when day breaks. A PIR motion sensor adds another layer of energy saving: the light only activates when someone actually enters the bathroom or hallway at night. Both sensors together create the most convenient configuration for nocturnal trips around a dark home.
Dusk sensor vs motion sensor — practical difference
The choice between a dusk sensor and a motion sensor (or their combination) depends on the mounting location:
- Dusk sensor only — the lamp glows all night, from dusk to dawn. Ideal for children's bedrooms, the hallway to the bathroom or a staircase. Yeelight Plug-in Night Light and BlitzWolf BW-LT9 operate in this mode.
- PIR motion sensor only — the lamp activates for 15–30 seconds when someone enters the room, then turns off. Best for a bathroom at night and rarely used hallways — minimal power consumption.
- Both sensors simultaneously — the lamp responds to movement but only after dark. During the day it does not activate even if motion is detected, preventing unnecessary operation in a lit interior. BlitzWolf BW-LT16 combines both sensors in one device.
Night lights for children — colour, shape and safety
Night lights for children must meet several conditions: a warm colour that does not disrupt melatonin production, sufficient brightness to safely get out of bed without dazzling, and an attractive appearance that encourages children not to fear the dark.
- Baseus Cute Hedgehog — hedgehog-shaped night light, warm light, gentle brightness. The animal shape means children want the lamp in their room. Safe touch housing, power through insulated contacts.
- Baseus Capsula — capsule-shaped night light in a minimalist form, suits modern interiors. Gentle ambient light, not dazzling during night-time waking.
- BlitzWolf BW-LT16 — lamp with dusk and motion sensors, RGB mode lets you choose an atmospheric colour. Children often prefer a gentle blue or violet tint.
A colour temperature of 1800–2700 K (warm amber and warm white) is the right range for night lights — scientists confirm that blue light (above 3500 K) disrupts melatonin production and makes it harder to fall asleep after a nocturnal bathroom trip. Warm amber light has minimal effect on the circadian rhythm.
Yeelight Bedside Lamp D2 — Bluetooth night lamp with colour adjustment
Yeelight Bedside Lamp D2 is a more advanced option — a bedside lamp with full brightness adjustment (1–100%) and colour temperature control (1700–6500 K). Bluetooth control without WiFi, Yeelight app for iOS and Android. The lamp supports mood scenes (sunset, sunrise, reading), schedules and gradual brightening (sunrise alarm). This is no longer just a night light but a complete bedside lighting system that replaces a traditional bedside lamp on a lead.
Night lights with USB for overnight phone charging
LDNIO models combine a night light function with a USB charger. Plugged in by the bed they serve a dual role: illuminating the bedside table and enabling overnight phone charging without hunting for a separate charger. Useful when you have one socket by the bed and want to get the most from it. BlitzWolf BW-LT16 also offers a USB port alongside the socket.
Orientation night lighting — hallway, bathroom, kitchen
Plug-in night lights work best as orientation lighting — bright enough to move safely around the home at night, dim enough not to wake sleeping members of the household. Optimal brightness is 5–15 lumens in continuous mode.
- Hallway — one lamp every 3–4 metres, preventing trips over stairs or furniture
- Bathroom — lamp near the entrance; a PIR model turns off automatically after leaving
- Kitchen — useful for a nocturnal glass of water, avoiding turning on the main light
- Children's room — continuous gentle light all night, eliminating fear of the dark
Safety of 230 V night lights
All plug-in night lights in this category carry the CE mark required for the European market and are approved for sale in the UK. Electrical contacts are insulated; housings are made from self-extinguishing material. Night lights generate no heat — LED diodes produce light at low internal voltage; housing temperature remains close to room temperature even after an all-night operation.
The full home lighting range is available in the home lighting category. LED strips for cabinet and furniture underlighting: LED strips. For wardrobes and walk-in wardrobes: wardrobe lights. Outdoor lighting: solar outdoor lights. For the desk: desk lamps.
FAQ — Frequently asked questions about night lights
What night light for a baby?
For infants the best choice is an amber-toned lamp (1800–2200 K) with minimum dimming capability. Warm orange light does not disrupt melatonin production during night feeds. Baseus Cute Hedgehog and Capsula offer gentle, warm light safe for the youngest. Avoid night lights with RGB mode emitting blue and cool white light — especially in a baby's room.
Does a night light with a dusk sensor glow during the day?
No. The dusk sensor (LDR) measures ambient light intensity and activates the lamp only below a certain threshold — typically about 5–10 lux, corresponding to early dusk or darkness behind closed blinds. During the day and when blinds are open the lamp stays off. If the room is strongly darkened even during the day (e.g. blackout blinds), the sensor may be fooled — in that case a motion sensor model is better.
Plug-in 230 V night light — electrical safety
230 V night lights have insulated contacts that are not accessible to children when correctly inserted in a socket. Manufacturers incorporate protection against reverse connection and power surges. CE-certified models have passed safety tests required by the European Union. Power consumption of 0.5–2 W means the lamp does not heat up — fire risk is practically zero.
