E27 smart bulbs — the standard that fits everywhere

The E27 screw fitting (large Edison) is the most common lighting fixture standard in homes — found in ceiling lights, floor lamps, table lamps and wall lights. Replacing a standard E27 bulb with a smart equivalent requires no wiring modifications. Simply unscrew the old bulb and screw the smart one into the same fitting.

A wide selection of E27 models is available:

  • Yeelight W1 E27 colour — RGB + adjustable white, WiFi control via Yeelight app, compatible with Google Home and Alexa
  • Yeelight W1 E27 dimmable white — no RGB, but maximum simplicity and brightness adjustment
  • Yeelight W3 E27 colour — improved generation, better colour saturation
  • Yeelight W4 E27 colour and dimmable (4-pack) — economical set of four bulbs to equip a whole living room
  • Yeelight Smart Bulb 1S white and RGB — popular series with high brightness
  • BlitzWolf BW-LT21 and BW-LT27 E27 RGB WiFi — a good alternative in the Tuya/Smart Life ecosystem
  • BlitzWolf BW-LT29 E27 — model with extended colour range
  • Gosund WB4 E27 RGB — Tuya and Smart Life integration, Google/Alexa support
  • Sonoff B02-B-A60 E27 — white WiFi (warm + cool), eWeLink control, Alexa/Google support
  • Sonoff B05-BL-A60 E27 — full RGB with white adjustment, eWeLink
  • Meross MSL120 E27 — non-HomeKit version, more affordable Meross ecosystem alternative
  • Meross MSL100HK and MSL120 (HomeKit) — full Apple HomeKit integration without an additional gateway

GU10 smart bulbs — for recessed and track fixtures

The GU10 fitting (two pin-style pins) is used mainly in recessed ceiling fixtures, track lighting and directional spotlights. An excellent option for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways — where you want several independently controlled light points.

  • Yeelight W1 GU10 colour — full RGB, WiFi control, compatible with Google Home and Alexa, available in 1 or 4-pack
  • Yeelight W1 GU10 white — brightness and colour temperature adjustment 2700–6500 K, 1 or 4-pack

When buying several GU10 bulbs for one room, choose the same model and the same control app — this allows them to be grouped in a single light scene and controlled simultaneously.

RGB vs tunable white — when to choose which

RGB bulbs change colour to any shade in the full spectrum — from cool green, through saturated red, to violet and orange. They work well for decorative lighting, shelf backlighting, mood lighting in the living room in the evenings and as a night light with a gentle wake-up colour alarm. They cannot, however, replace good functional lighting for work — saturated RGB colours have a lower CRI and distort colour perception.

Tunable white bulbs change only the colour temperature — from warm 2700 K (yellow, relaxing) to cool 6500 K (blue-white, stimulating). This type is optimal for a home office, kitchen and areas where you work or read. Combined with brightness control they offer enormous flexibility to adapt lighting to the time of day and activity.

Apple HomeKit — Siri control without a gateway

Meross HomeKit series bulbs (MSL100HK, MSL120HK) stand out for their full native Apple HomeKit integration. Once added to the Home app on iPhone, you can control them by voice via Siri, create geolocation-based automations (turn the lamp on when I arrive home) and group them with other Apple devices. Importantly — no additional gateway or hub is required: an iPhone or iPad acting as a home automation hub is all that is needed. The best choice for users deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem.

Smart filament bulbs — retro look, modern connectivity

If you want the decorative look of a classic bulb with a visible filament, combined with WiFi control, go for filament models:

  • Yeelight Filament ST64 — vintage bulb shape, visible LED filament, warm 2200 K white, Yeelight app control
  • Sonoff B02-F-ST64 E27 — WiFi filament in the eWeLink ecosystem, brightness control, retro ST64 bulb
  • Sonoff B02-F-A60 E27 — classic A60 shape with a filament effect

Smart filament bulbs look excellent in lamps with clear shades, industrial loft-style fittings and decorative chandeliers where the bulb itself is visible and forms part of the decor.

How to switch to smart lighting step by step

Swapping standard bulbs for smart ones is simple and requires no electrician. Start with one room — ideally the living room or bedroom, where lighting serves both a functional and decorative purpose. Choose one control ecosystem: Yeelight (own app + Google/Alexa), Meross HomeKit (for Apple users) or Tuya/Smart Life (BlitzWolf, Gosund — broad compatibility). Add the bulbs to the app according to the instructions, assigning them to a room. From that point you can create time schedules, automations and control groups — e.g. an "Evening" scene that dims all living room lights to 30% and sets warm 2700 K with a single tap.

Where to recycle LED bulbs?

LED bulbs (including smart ones) contain electronic components and must not be thrown in general waste. Return them to a household waste recycling centre, an electrical waste bin at a DIY or electronics store, or use the free take-back scheme at the retailer when buying a new product. Many local councils also run mobile electrical waste collections — check the schedule on the council website.

Related categories: smart ceiling lights that accept bulbs, desk lamps with built-in LEDs, and LED strips for decorative backlighting.

FAQ — Smart bulbs

Where to recycle LED bulbs?
LED bulbs are returned to household electrical waste recycling points, electrical waste bins in DIY or electronics stores. Retailers are legally obliged to accept used electrical equipment free of charge.

Do smart bulbs work without the internet?
It depends on the manufacturer. Yeelight models work locally via Bluetooth or WiFi — basic functions (on/off, brightness) work without the internet via the app. Time automations and remote control (from outside the home) require cloud connectivity. Meross HomeKit works locally over the home network without internet access, provided the automation hub (iPhone/iPad/HomePod) is on the same network.

E27 or GU10 bulb — how to tell them apart?
E27 is a screw fitting with a round base — it screws in like a classic bulb. GU10 is a bayonet fitting with two pin-style pins 10 mm apart — it pushes in and twists 90°. Check the type of fitting before buying: recessed ceiling fixtures most commonly use GU10; classic table and floor lamps use E27.
