The category includes BlitzWolf (BW-SL8 RGB WiFi, BW-SL3 LED, BWL-FL-0001 36W with remote, BWL-FL-0002 25W smart) and Meross MSL450HK with native HomeKit. Brightness, colour temperature and RGB colour adjustment from the app or by voice.

Floor lamps for the living room — how they transform the space

Floor lamps are one of the most effective ways to change a living room's atmosphere without renovation. A single overhead light produces flat, even illumination — functional but characterless. A floor lamp placed in a corner or beside an armchair creates a zone of brightness that visually enlarges the room and adds depth to the interior. This is the multi-point lighting principle used by interior designers — several sources at different levels instead of one on the ceiling.

Freestanding floor lamps also have a practical advantage: no wall drilling or electrical work required. Plug into a socket, place where you like and you are done. In the smart version, control is via app, voice or automatic schedule.

BlitzWolf BW-SL8 — RGB WiFi floor lamp for the living room

BlitzWolf BW-SL8 is a floor lamp with full RGB and WiFi connectivity. The polarised acrylic shade emits soft, evenly diffused light without hard shadows. 1–100% brightness adjustment and full RGB 16 million colour palette. Control via the BlitzWolf app (iOS and Android), Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

  • Solid colour mode — any RGB colour or white in the 2700–6500 K range
  • Dynamic modes — gradient, pulse, rainbow, wave, flash
  • Music sync — lamp responds to sound from the phone microphone
  • Schedules — automatic activation at sunset, off at midnight

BW-SL8 works well in living rooms as an atmospheric lamp, beside the TV as bias lighting (reducing eye fatigue) and in rooms where you want the ability to change the mood colour of the lighting.

Meross MSL450HK — floor lamp with Apple HomeKit

Meross MSL450HK is a floor lamp with native Apple HomeKit support — no additional bridges or hubs needed. If you use an iPhone and the Apple ecosystem, simply scan the QR code in the Home app and the lamp is ready in minutes. Siri control ("Hey Siri, dim the living room lamp"), Home app and HomeKit automations.

MSL450HK supports brightness and colour temperature adjustment (warm to cool white). In HomeKit automation mode you can set an "Evening in the living room" scene — the lamp automatically switches to warm 2700 K at 7 PM. Combined with other HomeKit devices (thermostat, blinds) you create complete smart home scenes.

Floor lamps vs ceiling lights — when is a floor lamp worthwhile?

A ceiling light illuminates the room generally — great for work and cleaning, but not for evening relaxation. A floor lamp complements ceiling lighting in specific situations:

  • Reading — a lamp placed behind an armchair or sofa provides directional, bright light without page reflections
  • Watching TV — a lamp behind the television or in the living room corner as bias lighting — reducing contrast between the dark room and the bright screen
  • Conversation and relaxation — a dimmed floor lamp in a warm tone creates a cosy atmosphere that is hard to achieve with a ceiling light
  • Bedroom — beside the headboard instead of a traditional bedside lamp — a taller and more elegant solution

How to position a floor lamp in the living room

A few positioning principles that work in practice:

  • Beside the sofa corner — to the side, slightly behind the person seated. Illuminates the face from above, creating a dramatic portrait-lighting effect.
  • In the corner behind the TV — directing the shade toward the wall (if the lamp is adjustable) creates bias lighting reflected off the wall. A warm 2700 K contrasts with the cool TV screen.
  • By the window — in the evenings it replaces natural light, preventing the "black glass" effect in a dark room.
  • Beside a bookcase — highlights the bookshelf and provides reading light for the spines.

Colour temperature in floor lamps

Smart models allow colour temperature adjustment — one of the most important parameters in living room lamps:

  • 2700 K (warm white) — equivalent to a traditional bulb, creates a cosy, relaxing atmosphere. Recommended for living rooms in the evenings and bedrooms.
  • 3000–4000 K (natural white) — good for reading and working, more focussing than warm light.
  • 5000–6500 K (cool white) — maximum alertness, good for tasks requiring concentration. In the living room in the evenings it can be too intense.

BlitzWolf BWL-FL-0002 (25 W smart) allows temperature adjustment from 2700 K to 6500 K via the app. Meross MSL450HK offers a warm-to-neutral white range.

RGB in a floor lamp — when it makes sense

Full RGB in a freestanding lamp like BlitzWolf BW-SL8 is not just "party mode". Practical uses of colour:

  • Red or orange in the evenings — limiting blue light before sleep, supporting natural melatonin production
  • Green or blue for streaming — a coloured background behind the camera adds character to a streaming setup
  • Music sync — a lamp pulsing to the beat during social gatherings

Automations — floor lamp connected to the whole home

Smart floor lamps integrate with automations via Alexa Routines, Google Home Automations or Apple HomeKit Automation:

  • "Turn on the floor lamp at sunset" — automatic activation after dark without a time schedule
  • "When I turn on the TV, dim the lamp to 30% in warm colour" — movie scene on demand
  • "When I leave home, turn off all lamps" — geofencing with automatic switching off

FAQ — Frequently asked questions about floor lamps

Floor lamp for the living room — what wattage to choose?

For a 15–25 m² living room as the sole or main evening light source, 25 W LED (BlitzWolf BWL-FL-0002) is sufficient. If the lamp is only to complement a ceiling light and serve for reading or mood building, 10–15 W is enough. The 36 W model (BWL-FL-0001) is the choice for larger rooms or when the floor lamp will be the sole light source in the space.

Is a WiFi floor lamp safe?

Yes. WiFi modules in smart lamps (BlitzWolf, Meross) are standard solutions certified by CE and FCC. Communication takes place via an encrypted protocol requiring your home router — there is no direct internet connection without your app account. Lamps do not record audio or video. Standby power consumption is 0.5–1 W.

HomeKit floor lamp — how to set it up?

Meross MSL450HK is configured via the Meross app or directly through the Home app on iPhone. Go to Add Accessory, scan the QR code on the lamp or box, and the lamp automatically appears in the Home app. You can assign it to a room, create scenes and automations via iOS without any additional steps. Requires iPhone with iOS 11.3 or later and a 2.4 GHz WiFi router.
