Wardrobe lights — why they are worth having
Wardrobe lights with a motion sensor solve a specific problem: even a well-lit room does not provide enough illumination inside a wardrobe. Clothes cast shadows, colours are hard to distinguish and reaching the back shelf in the dark is an everyday frustration. An LED light inside the wardrobe — mounted without cables and without drilling — costs a fraction of a built-in electrical fitting and installs in minutes.
The key advantages are automatic operation and no wiring. A PIR or magnetic door sensor means you never need to remember to switch the light on and off. A rechargeable battery or AA/AAA cells last many weeks of normal use.
PIR motion sensor vs magnetic door sensor
Two types of detection are used in wardrobe lights:
- PIR motion sensor — detects body heat within 1–3 metres. Activates the lamp when you approach the wardrobe and turns it off after several seconds of no movement. Works well in sliding wardrobes and open walk-in wardrobes without traditional doors. Baseus Sunshine Wardrobe Light and Sunshine Series PIR models use PIR detection.
- Magnetic door sensor — responds to door opening and closing. Activates immediately when a cabinet door is opened, turns off when it is closed. Uses less energy as the lamp only glows while the door is open. Popular in kitchen cabinets and medicine cupboards.
Some models combine both solutions or offer a manual mode — useful when you want the light to stay on longer while organising the wardrobe.
Dusk sensor — activation only when it is dark
Baseus Sunshine Wardrobe Light and Baseus Sunshine Series PIR include an additional dusk sensor. The lamp responds to PIR motion only in darkness or low light — it does not activate during the day even if the sensor detects movement. This is an important advantage for wardrobes placed near a window or in well-lit rooms: the battery does not discharge unnecessarily during the day. USB charging every few weeks is all that is needed.
Three Yeelight Closet Light sizes — when to choose which
Yeelight Closet Light is one of the most popular wardrobe lights. Available in three sizes, each in black and silver:
- 20 cm — for small bedside cabinets, shoe shelves and drawers. Fits anywhere a larger model would not. 3M adhesive tape mounting.
- 40 cm — the standard choice for wardrobes and kitchen cabinets. Illuminates the full width of an average shelf in a double-door wardrobe.
- 60 cm — for large sliding wardrobes, walk-in wardrobes and pantries. Even illumination across the full shelf length eliminates corner shadows.
A 4000K (natural white) colour temperature is a better option for a wardrobe than cool 6500K white. Natural white more faithfully renders the actual colours of clothes, making it easier to choose outfits and is gentler on the eyes during brief early-morning wardrobe checks.
Yeelight Ultra-thin A30 and A50 — ultra-slim profile
Yeelight Ultra-thin A30 (30 cm) and A50 (50 cm) models feature an exceptionally flat body — just a few millimetres thick. With the wardrobe closed, the lamp is virtually invisible and does not interfere with items on the top shelf. The Ultra-thin series is designed for wardrobes with narrower frames and cabinets where standard lamps would not fit. The Yeelight Ultra-Thin Intelligent Linkage Cabinet Light (2-pack) contains two lamps with a synchronisation feature — both respond simultaneously to movement or door opening.
Baseus Sunshine Series PIR — USB charging, weeks without recharging
Baseus Sunshine Series PIR 1200 mAh is a wardrobe light with a built-in 1200 mAh battery charged via USB. With average use — around a dozen wardrobe openings per day, each lasting several seconds — the battery lasts 4–6 weeks between charges. Charging takes a few hours from a standard USB charger or power bank. No need to replace batteries is a convenience that is especially appreciated in hard-to-reach spots, such as the top shelf of a wardrobe.
No-drill mounting — 3M tape and magnet
All wardrobe lights in this category mount without tools and without drilling. Two methods are available:
- 3M VHB tape — included in the set, holds several kilograms and is resistant to temperature changes. Sticks to wood, MDF, metal and smooth lacquered surfaces. Removal without damaging the wardrobe by warming the tape with a hair dryer.
- Magnet — selected BlitzWolf and Baseus models have magnetic mounting. Allows repeated attachment and removal without leaving a mark. Works in metal cabinets or when a metal plate is fitted to the rear panel of the wardrobe.
Applications: wardrobe, kitchen cabinets, pantry
Wardrobe lights work everywhere fixed wiring is absent:
- Walk-in wardrobe and sliding wardrobe — the primary use, illuminating clothes and shelves
- Upper kitchen wall cabinets — BlitzWolf BW-LT8 is a model designed specifically for mounting under upper kitchen cabinets
- Pantry and storage cupboard — a PIR sensor means the light activates automatically when you enter
- Drawers — a light in a desk or dresser drawer that turns on when opened
- Hallway and corridor — at a coat rack or shoe cabinet, orientation lighting at night
More cable-free lights are available in the plug-in night lights category. LED strips also work excellently for cabinet and furniture underlighting. Need a desk or computer lamp? Check desk lamps and monitor lights. All home lighting in one place: home lighting.
FAQ — Frequently asked questions about wardrobe lights
How long do wardrobe light batteries last?
It depends on the model and frequency of use. Battery-powered (AA/AAA) models with 10–15 wardrobe openings per day last 2–4 months. USB rechargeable models such as Baseus Sunshine Series PIR (1200 mAh) need charging every 4–6 weeks. A dusk sensor extends battery life — the lamp does not respond to movement during the day.
Does the PIR motion sensor respond to cats and dogs?
Yes, PIR sensors respond to body heat regardless of species — they will detect a cat or dog within range. If this is a problem, choose a model with a magnetic (door) sensor that responds only to the wardrobe being opened, not to nearby movement.
What length wardrobe light for an 80 cm wide wardrobe?
A 60 cm model is sufficient for an 80 cm wardrobe — it illuminates the central part of the shelf, with minimal shadows at the sides. Alternatively, two 40 cm lamps mounted symmetrically provide more even illumination across the full width. Yeelight Closet Light 60 cm is available in black and silver finish.
