iPad Pro 12.9" 2021, 5th gen.

Accessories for iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2021 (M1, mini-LED)

The iPad Pro 12.9" 2021 is the fifth generation of the large iPad Pro — the first with a Liquid Retina XDR display (mini-LED backlight) and the M1 chip. HDR brightness of up to 1600 nits and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio make it an excellent tool for video and photo editing.

Case compatibility

The iPad Pro 12.9" 2021 is 0.5 mm thicker than the 2018 and 2020 models (6.4 mm vs 5.9 mm) because of the mini-LED backlight. Most smart cases account for this difference and fit both the 2020 and 2021 models, but it is worth checking the product description. The iPad Pro 12.9" 2022 (M2) has exactly the same dimensions as the 2021 model.

Accessory types

• Smart cases — magnetic cover, stand function, sleep/wake
• Back cases — rear protection, compatible with Magic Keyboard
• 9H tempered glass — protection for the large 12.9-inch screen
• Matte paperlike films — a paper texture for drawing with Apple Pencil
• Rugged cases — reinforced protection for working on the go

What to look out for

The large 12.9-inch screen makes the iPad Pro prone to cracking when dropped — a case with raised edges is a sensible investment. The Apple Pencil 2 attaches magnetically to the top (shorter) edge — make sure the case has a cut-out or a flat surface in that spot.

Other 12.9" generations: 2020 (4th gen), 2022 (6th gen). Smaller version: iPad Pro 11" 2021. Larger size: iPad Pro 13" 2024.

FAQ

Will an iPad Pro 12.9" 2020 case fit the 2021 model?

Often yes, but not always — the 2021 model is 0.5 mm thicker because of the mini-LED. Most manufacturers design cases compatible with both generations, but check the product description.

Is the iPad Pro 12.9" 2021 the same as the iPad Pro 13" 2024?

No — the iPad Pro 13" 2024 (M4) is a completely new design, much thinner (5.1 mm) and with an OLED screen. It requires separate accessories.
