Xiaomi Mi 9: specs that matter when choosing a case

The Xiaomi Mi 9 has a 6.39-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080 × 2340. According to GSMArena, the phone measures 157.5 × 74.7 × 7.6 mm and weighs 173 g. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and the back by Gorilla Glass 5. The body has no water resistance rating, so splashes are a real risk for it.

On the back there is a triple camera: a 48 MP main sensor, a 16 MP ultra-wide and a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x zoom. The module sticks out above the back, so without a case the lenses rub against the table top and the inside of your pocket.

The glass back is slippery and scratches easily, which is why most people go for at least a slim case. Cases for the Xiaomi Mi 9 in this category include:

Lens protectors guard the three lenses against scratches, which show up in photos as blur and halos around bright light sources. Fully adhesive tempered glass usually works better with the in-display reader than protectors glued only at the edges.

The Mi 9, Mi 9 Pro and Mi 9T have different bodies

The Mi 9 Pro 5G has the same screen, but it is thicker (approx. 8.5 mm) and heavier, so cases are not interchangeable, although manufacturers describe some screen protectors as compatible with both versions. The Xiaomi Mi 9T has a pop-up front camera and a completely different shape.

Charging and extras for the Xiaomi Mi 9

The Mi 9 charges at up to 27 W by cable via USB-C and up to 20 W wirelessly. For cable-free charging you will need a Qi wireless charger: with standard Qi chargers the power will be lower than the maximum. Slim cases do not block wireless charging, unlike thick covers with metal parts. For fast wired charging, a wall charger with Quick Charge support comes in handy.
