Nintendo Switch — dimensions and features that matter when choosing accessories

The standard Nintendo Switch has a 6.2-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1280 × 720. With the Joy-Cons attached, the console measures about 102 × 239 × 13.9 mm and weighs about 400 g. On the top edge there is the game card slot and a 3.5 mm headphone output, on the bottom edge a USB-C port, and under the kickstand at the back a microSD card slot. Cases for playing must leave these areas uncovered and must not block the rails the Joy-Cons slide along.

In the Nintendo accessories family, each console has its own category. The Switch OLED has a larger 7-inch screen, and the Switch Lite a smaller 5.5-inch one, with Joy-Cons permanently built into the body. The Switch 2 is a completely different, larger console.

Cases and pouches for the Nintendo Switch

The Switch OLED is slightly longer, which is why manufacturers describe some carrying cases as fitting both versions. Fitted covers and screen glass, however, have to be chosen for the specific model.

Tempered glass and screen film for the Switch

The screen is easy to scratch when sliding the console into the dock or in a bag. Tempered glass keeps the screen clear and responsive to touch, hybrid glass is thinner and more flexible, and matte films for gamers reduce reflections when playing outdoors. With glass, check that it does not make it harder to slide the console into the dock.

Controllers, charging and audio

For playing in TV mode, wireless controllers and gamepads will come in handy. Charging docks and stands charge the console or the Joy-Cons and keep your desk tidy. After a system update, the console supports Bluetooth headphones, and an alternative is Bluetooth transmitters plugged into the USB-C port or the 3.5 mm jack.

Does Switch OLED glass fit the standard Switch?

No. The Switch OLED has a 7-inch screen and the standard model a 6.2-inch one, so OLED glass will not fit the smaller screen.

Can you charge the console in a case?

With fitted covers, usually yes — they have a cut-out for the USB-C port. However, the console has to be slid into the dock without the cover, unless the manufacturer declares dock compatibility.
