Smartphone Microphones — A Guide to Types

Recording audio with a phone without an external microphone often results in noise, echo and unclear speech. A dedicated phone microphone solves this problem — it improves audio quality in videos, podcasts, streams and video calls.

Lavalier (Clip-On) Microphones

Lavalier microphones are tiny microphones clipped to clothing, close to the speaker's mouth. Available in wired (3.5 mm jack or USB-C) and wireless (with transmitter and receiver) versions. Wireless models are more convenient as they do not restrict movement — range is typically 10-50 m. Ideal for vlogs, interviews and course recordings.

Condenser (Shotgun) Microphones

Shotgun microphones mounted on a smartphone or tripod capture sound from one direction, reducing ambient noise. They work well for outdoor recording and noisy conditions. They require a mount or hot shoe.

What to Look For When Choosing?

  • Connector — USB-C for Android, Lightning for older iPhones, 3.5 mm jack universal (with adapter)
  • Wireless vs wired — wireless gives freedom of movement, wired is cheaper and requires no charging
  • Polar pattern — omnidirectional (lavalier) captures sound from all sides, cardioid (shotgun) from one direction
  • Battery life — wireless models run 4-10 hours on a single charge
