iPad mini 7.9" 2014, 3rd gen.
Accessories for the iPad mini 3 (7.9 inches) — above all folio cases that protect the screen and work as a stand. The tablet has a 7.9-inch Retina display, a Home button with Touch ID, a Lightning port and a headphone jack. The 200 × 134.7 × 7.5 mm body is the same as on the iPad mini 2, which is why cases for the mini 2 and mini 3 are interchangeable. Cases for this model are offered by Tech-Protect, among others.

iPad mini 3 — dimensions and features that matter for accessories
The 2014 iPad mini 3 measures 200 × 134.7 × 7.5 mm and weighs 331 g (Wi-Fi). The 7.9-inch Retina IPS display has a density of 326 ppi and an oleophobic coating. Below the screen there is a Home button with a Touch ID reader — it is the first iPad mini with this reader. There is a Lightning port on the bottom edge, a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the top and a 5 MP iSight camera on the back. The tablet does not support Apple Pencil.
The body dimensions are identical to the iPad mini 2, and the layout of the volume buttons, switch and camera has stayed the same. That is why cases labelled “iPad mini 2/3” or “1st, 2nd and 3rd generation” fit the mini 3. Cases for the iPad mini 4 and iPad mini 5 do not fit — both are taller (203.2 mm) and thinner (6.1 mm).
Which iPad mini 3 case should you choose?
Folio cases (smart case)
The most practical type of case for the mini 3. A rigid back protects the rear and corners, while the cover protects the screen. Magnets in the cover put the tablet to sleep when closed and wake it when opened, which saves battery. When folded, the cover forms a stand for watching films or typing on the on-screen keyboard.
What to check in a case
- Openings for the Home button, Lightning port, headphone jack and camera — in mini 2/3 cases they are in the same place.
- The lip around the screen — the higher it rises above the glass, the better it protects it in a flat fall.
- Material — faux leather is easy to clean, and rigid polycarbonate backs do not deform over time.
iPad mini 3 screen protection
The mini 3 screen has the same dimensions as the mini 2, so glass and films for the 7.9-inch iPad mini 2/3 are compatible with it. Tempered glass protects the screen from cracking, while a matte film reduces reflections and fingerprints. When applying the protector, pay attention to the cut-out for the Home button so that the Touch ID reader is not covered. A folio case also works well on this model, as it protects the screen in a bag on its own.
What to look for when buying
- Look for the “iPad mini 7.9 2014”, “mini 3” or “mini 1/2/3” label.
- For notes, use a capacitive stylus from the styluses for phones and tablets category.
- If you have several older iPad mini models, check the generation in Settings — you can recognise the mini 3 by its Home button with Touch ID.
You will find other generations in the iPad mini category.
