iPad 10.2" 2021, 9th gen.

iPad 9th generation — dimensions and features that matter for accessories

The 2021 iPad 10.2" measures 250.6 × 174.1 × 7.5 mm and weighs 487 g (Wi-Fi version). On the front there is a 10.2-inch Retina IPS display with True Tone and a physical Home button with a Touch ID reader, a Lightning port on the bottom edge and a Smart Connector on the side for keyboards that work without pairing. On the back there is a single 8 MP camera, and on the front a 12 MP ultra-wide camera with Center Stage.

The body dimensions are identical to the iPad 10.2" 7th generation and the iPad 10.2" 8th generation. That is why cases labelled “iPad 10.2” or “10.2 2019/2020/2021” also fit the 9th gen. They do not fit the iPad 10.9" 10th generation, which has a larger screen, a USB-C port and no Home button.

Which iPad 9th generation case should you choose?

• Folio cases (smart case) — the cover protects the screen, puts the tablet to sleep and wakes it, and folds into a stand for writing or watching.
• Cases with an Apple Pencil holder — the 1st generation pencil does not attach magnetically to the body, so a pocket or loop in the case helps you keep track of it.
• Rugged cases — thicker frames and reinforced corners, often with a handle or hand strap. They work well at school, for children and for fieldwork.
• Keyboard cases — with a Bluetooth keyboard that turns the tablet into a device for writing longer texts.
• Clear back covers — light protection for the back that can be combined with a separate cover.

Cases for this model are offered by ESR, Spigen, Urban Armor Gear, Speck, OtterBox, Uniq and Tech-Protect, among others.

Tempered glass and films for the iPad 9th generation

The 10.2-inch screen can be protected with tempered glass or a film. Glass handles impacts better and keeps the smoothness of the original screen. Matte paper-like films reduce reflections and add slight resistance when writing with a stylus — they are popular with people who draw or take notes. Screen protection for the iPad 10.2 usually fits the 7th, 8th and 9th generation, because the front glass has the same dimensions and the same Home button layout.

What to look for when choosing accessories

• Look for the “iPad 10.2” label — 10.9 or 11 refers to a different tablet.
• For writing and drawing you need the 1st generation Apple Pencil or another compatible stylus. You will find universal models in the styluses for phones and tablets category.
• A folio case should have magnets that trigger automatic sleep — this saves battery.

You will find other generations in the iPad category.
