What is home automation and how does it work?

Home automation, also known as a smart home, connects electrical devices into a single remotely controlled environment. Sockets, switches, bulbs, sensors and cameras communicate over the home network and respond to external conditions or commands issued via an app, a voice assistant or a schedule. The foundation is a Wi-Fi router or ZigBee gateway to which you connect additional devices.

In practice, automating a flat can mean a very simple scenario: a smart socket turns a lamp off at 11 PM, or something more complex — a motion sensor activates the staircase lighting only after dark and automatically turns it off after 30 seconds without movement.

Communication protocols: WiFi, ZigBee and Matter

The choice of protocol is crucial when planning your system:

  • WiFi — devices connect directly to the router, no gateway needed. The simplest start, but with many devices it can strain the network. Examples: Sonoff Basic R2, Meross MSS310, Gosund EP2. They operate through the Tuya / Smart Life or eWeLink apps.
  • ZigBee — low-energy mesh protocol, requires a gateway (Sonoff Zigbee Bridge, Aqara gateway or BlitzWolf BW-GW1). Devices form a network between themselves, increasing range and stability. Sonoff SNZB and BlitzWolf BW-IS sensors operate in this standard.
  • Matter — a new open standard supported by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung. Matter devices (e.g. Meross MS600) operate locally without the cloud, meaning faster response and independence from the internet. The standard has been gaining popularity since 2023.

Platforms: Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa

At homescreen.pl we offer devices compatible with the main smart home ecosystems:

  • Apple HomeKit — the Meross HomeKit range (sockets MSS310HK, bulbs MSL120, sensors MS200H). Integration with Siri, iOS Shortcuts and iCloud automations. Local communication without cloud routing.
  • Google Home and Amazon Alexa — supported by most Wi-Fi devices on the Tuya/Smart Life (Gosund, BlitzWolf) and eWeLink (Sonoff) platforms. Voice control in English.
  • Home Assistant — an open local platform that integrates all the protocols listed above. Ideal for advanced users who want full control without relying on manufacturers' clouds.

Where to start building a smart home?

The easiest entry point is smart sockets. You replace a standard socket or plug in an adapter, and every connected device gains a schedule, energy monitoring and remote control. No electrical work required. The next step is switches and wall modules for existing lighting fixtures.

If you want surveillance, start with one IP camera inside the home. Smoke sensors, door/window sensors and motion detectors add another layer of security and automation.

Home automation category overview

  • Wall switches — replace a classic wall switch with a smart one, with a touch panel or physical button
  • In-wall modules — modules installed inside the back-box or device enclosure
  • Smart sockets — adapters and built-in sockets with energy metering
  • LED strips — RGB and RGBIC backlighting for TVs, furniture, stairs and kitchens
  • Sensors — smoke, CO, motion, door/window, flood, temperature and humidity
  • Cameras — indoor and outdoor IP monitoring, webcams
  • Smart power strips — strips with individually switchable outlets
  • Lighting — bulbs, ceiling lights, LED strips, garden and night lights

Home Assistant integration

Home Assistant is a free, open-source platform installed on a mini-computer (Raspberry Pi, NUC) or in a Docker container. It locally supports Tuya, eWeLink, ZigBee (via USB dongle) and Matter protocols. Devices work without the internet and without dependence on manufacturer servers. A dedicated HACS integration is available for Sonoff; BlitzWolf and Gosund work via the Tuya Local protocol.

Brands at homescreen.pl

  • Sonoff (eWeLink) — the widest range of ZigBee modules and switches, solutions for both beginners and advanced users
  • Meross (HomeKit) — the best Apple ecosystem integration, Matter since 2023
  • BlitzWolf — excellent price-to-quality ratio, Tuya platform
  • Gosund — budget-friendly Tuya sockets and plugs
  • Yeelight — smart lighting specialist
  • Baseus / Ugreen — IP cameras, webcams, accessories

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Do I need a ZigBee gateway?

Only if you choose ZigBee devices (Sonoff SNZB, BlitzWolf BW-IS). WiFi devices connect directly to the router. A ZigBee gateway (e.g. Sonoff Zigbee Bridge Pro) extends range and lets you manage dozens of sensors on a single hub without loading the WiFi network.

What to choose for a smart home starter?

A smart socket with energy metering (e.g. Meross MSS310HK for HomeKit or Gosund EP2 for Alexa/Google). Low cost, zero risk, and you immediately see how schedules and remote control via the app work.

Do WiFi devices work without the internet?

It depends on the platform. Most Tuya and eWeLink devices require the cloud for app control, but locally stored automations (e.g. schedules built into the device) work without the internet. Matter devices and Home Assistant integration work fully locally, without the cloud.

Can I mix devices from different brands?

Yes, provided they use the same platform or you integrate them through Home Assistant. Sonoff (eWeLink) and Tuya/Smart Life devices can be combined via Google Home or Alexa. HomeKit devices work exclusively in the Apple ecosystem. Home Assistant unifies all platforms into one environment.
