Powerbank for the airplane

Power bank for planes — portable chargers compliant with IATA regulations. Allowed in carry-on luggage only (never in checked baggage!). Up to 100 Wh (approx. 27,000 mAh) — no airline approval needed, max 2 per person. 100–160 Wh — with airline approval. Above 160 Wh — prohibited on board.

A legible factory label showing the capacity in Wh is required — a missing label will result in confiscation at the security checkpoint.

Power bank for planes — IATA regulations 2026

IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations govern the transport of power banks on aircraft. Lithium-ion cells may only be carried in carry-on luggage — never in checked baggage (fire risk in an inaccessible area).

Capacity limits

  • Up to 100 Wh (approx. 27,000 mAh) — no additional permits required, max 2 per person. 10,000 mAh (37 Wh) and 20,000 mAh (74 Wh) — hassle-free
  • 100–160 Wh (approx. 27,000–43,000 mAh) — requires prior airline approval. 30,000 mAh (approx. 111 Wh) — check with the airline
  • Above 160 Wh — completely prohibited. 50,000 mAh (approx. 185 Wh) — not for planes

How to convert mAh to Wh

Formula: Wh = mAh × V / 1000. Standard cell voltage is 3.7 V. Examples: 10,000 mAh = 37 Wh, 20,000 mAh = 74 Wh, 27,000 mAh = 100 Wh (threshold), 30,000 mAh = 111 Wh.

Practical requirements

  • Label — a legible factory label showing capacity in Wh. No label means confiscation
  • Carry-on — never pack a power bank in checked luggage
  • Max 2 units — per person, each up to 100 Wh
  • No charging on board — some airlines prohibit using power banks during the flight

Safe choice for flying: 10,000 mAh or 20,000 mAh. Magnetic for iPhone: MagSafe.
