Laptop stands — ergonomics and cooling

Working with a laptop placed flat on a desk forces you to tilt your head down, leading to neck and back pain. A stand raises the screen by 5-15 cm, positioning it closer to your line of sight. An additional benefit is improved airflow under the housing, which lowers component temperatures.

What to look for?

Laptop size compatibility — check the max width and weight the stand supports. Models for 15" may not always hold a 17" laptop. Yes, but the effect depends on the laptop model and workload. Stands with fans lower the housing temperature by 3-8 degrees C. Simply raising the laptop (without a fan) improves natural cooling by 2-4 degrees C thanks to better airflow.

Is an aluminum stand better than plastic?

Aluminum is more durable, dissipates heat better and looks premium. Plastic is lighter and cheaper — better for travel. For a stationary desk, aluminum is the better choice.
