The Edge 70 Max closes the Edge 70 series in terms of equipment — it has a large OLED panel with a high refresh rate and an extensive set of cameras. Two things count when choosing protection: the way glass sits on the edges of the screen, and how far the camera module protrudes.

Protecting a flat screen

The Edge 70 Max has a flat 6.8-inch OLED panel — despite the name of the series suggesting curved edges. That is good news when choosing protection: on a flat screen the layer adheres over the whole surface, leaves no bubbles at the edges and does not peel off at the sides, as it can do on rounded panels.

Hybrid glass is a flexible layer, thinner than classic tempered glass. It is harder to chip when it catches the edge of a desk — instead of cracking along its whole length, it takes the impact at a point. From the factory the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i, but that is a safeguard against scratching, not against a chip after a fall onto an edge.

Lens protection

The camera island stands above the plane of the back, so a phone put down screen up rests on it. Lens covers protect the camera glass against scratching by sand and grit on a worktop — and a scratch on camera glass can spoil every photo taken against the light, because it causes scattering and haze across the frame. It is the cheapest safeguard in the whole set, and it protects the component that costs the most to repair.

What to look for in a case for a large phone

The Edge 70 Max is a large phone with a capacious cell, so the cover affects comfort more than on a compact construction. Too thick a rugged variant means the device stops sitting comfortably in the hand, and reaching the top edge of the screen with a thumb requires shifting the phone.
