Touch wall switches vs in-wall back-box modules
A smart touch wall switch is a complete wall plate with a touch panel that replaces an existing mechanical switch. Instead of a physical rocker you get a glass or plastic panel that responds to touch and simultaneously communicates via WiFi or ZigBee. Unlike in-wall modules installed in the back-box, a touch wall switch also changes the appearance of the wall and is visible as a modern decorative element.
Smart touch light switches control the same lighting circuits as standard switches. They retain the ability to switch by physical touch, and additionally provide app control, schedules, scenes and voice assistant integration.
1-gang, 2-gang, 3-gang: how many circuits are you controlling?
The number of gangs (touch zones) corresponds to the number of independent lighting circuits controlled from one switch:
- 1-gang — one touch zone, one lamp or one circuit. Sonoff T1 1-gang, Meross MSS550HK, BlitzWolf BW-SH1
- 2-gang — two touch zones, two independent circuits, e.g. two light groups in the living room. Sonoff T1 2-gang, Meross MSS560HK, BlitzWolf BW-SS8
- 3-gang — three zones, for example living room, kitchen and hallway from one wall switch. Sonoff T3, T2 3-gang, Meross MSS570HK
When choosing, check how many lighting circuits reach your back-box. Unused gangs can be left unassigned or used to control another device via the app.
Premium glass and aesthetics: Sonoff TX Ultimate
Sonoff TX Ultimate is a series of touch wall switches with a glass panel and LED edge lighting. Available in 1, 2 and 3-gang, in white and black. TX Ultimate supports multi-touch gestures and light effects — subtle edge lighting indicates the switch state and adds a visual effect in a dark room. This is the choice for those who care not just about function but also about the look of the installation.
T1 and T2 models have a plastic housing with LED backlighting at the buttons. T3 is the version with stronger backlighting and a glass front plate.
Meross HomeKit: light switches with iOS support
Meross offers a range of Apple HomeKit-certified switches that operate locally via the router without the Meross cloud:

Wireless switches: no wiring, no drilling
It is not always possible to replace a wired switch. In those situations, wireless buttons and remotes come to the rescue:

- Sonoff S-MATE2 — WiFi wireless transmitter that can be connected to an existing classic light switch and wraps it with smart features without replacing the whole switch

Wireless light switches work excellently as additional control points, e.g. at the bedroom entrance, in spots where running cable is difficult, or as a temporary solution during renovation.
Modern light switches: step-by-step installation
Replacing a classic switch with a smart one typically takes 15–30 minutes. Before starting, turn off the circuit breaker for the relevant circuit and verify zero voltage with a multimeter. Then unscrew the old plate, disconnect the wires, connect them to the smart switch according to the diagram in the manual (L, N or load output) and secure the new plate to the wall. WiFi setup in the app takes another 2–3 minutes.
If you lack electrical installation experience or your wiring is old and uncertain, use a qualified electrician.

FAQ — Touch wall switches
Does a smart touch switch require a neutral wire?
Most WiFi touch switches (Sonoff T1, T2, T3) require a neutral wire N in the back-box. In older installations without a neutral, LED lamp flickering may occur. Check before purchasing whether your back-box has three wires (L, N and load output). If not, consider in-wall modules without a neutral (e.g. Sonoff ZBMINIL2) or a wireless switch requiring no wiring.
Wireless or wired smart switch?
Wired (T1, T2, Meross MSS550HK) gives a more reliable connection, always available via WiFi, but requires installation in a back-box with a neutral wire. Wireless (SNZB-01, S-MATE2) mounts without tools on 3M tape, but requires a charged battery, and ZigBee/RF range depends on the flat layout. For permanent use, wired is better; as additional control points or in spots without wiring, wireless is invaluable.
HomeKit light switches: which to choose?
